Time reversal of surface plasmons

چکیده

<p style='text-indent:20px;'>We study in this work the so-called "instantaneous time mirrors" context of surface plasmons. The latter are associated with high frequency waves at a conducting sheet. Instantaneous mirrors were introduced [<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="b3">3</xref>], idea that singular perturbations variable wave-type equation create time-reversed focusing wave. We consider time-dependent three-dimensional Maxwell's equations, coupled to Drude's model for description current. mirror is modeled by sudden, strong, change Drude weight electrons on Our goal characterize wave, particular quantify quality refocusing. establish depends distance source sheet, and some physical parameters such as relaxation electrons. also show that, addition plasmonic generates free propagating wave offers, contrary resolution direction orthogonal Blurring effects due non-instantaneous finally investigated.</p>

Surface plasmons and singularities.

We apply the conformal transformation technique to study systematically a variety of singular plasmonic structures, including two-dimensional sharp edges, rough surfaces, and nanocrescents. These structures are shown to exhibit two distinct features. First, different from a planar metallic surface, the surface plasmon excitations on the examined structures have a lower bound cutoff at a finite ...

Bouncing surface plasmons.

Employing an interferometric cavity ring-down technique we study the launching, propagation and reflection of surface plasmons on a smooth gold-air interface that is intersected by two parallel, sub-wavelength wide slits. Inside the low-finesse optical cavity defined by these slits the surface plasmon is observed to make multiple bounces. Our experimental data allow us to determine the surface-...

On surface hopping and time-reversal.

While individual Tully-style fewest switches surface hopping (FSSH) trajectories are stochastic and cannot be inverted in time, it is possible to reverse in time the dynamics of a swarm of FSSH trajectories. Here we show exactly how to invert such dynamics, and we investigate the stability of such time-reversed surface hopping dynamics. We demonstrate that FSSH trajectories can be inverted succ...

Electrical excitation of surface plasmons.

We exploit a plasmon mediated two-step momentum down-conversion scheme to convert low-energy tunneling electrons into propagating photons. Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) propagating along an extended gold nanowire are excited on one end by low-energy electron tunneling and are then converted to free-propagating photons at the other end. The separation of excitation and outcoupling proves tha...

Optical Isolator Utilizing Surface Plasmons

Feasibility of usage of surface plasmons in a new design of an integrated optical isolator has been studied. In the case of surface plasmons propagating at a boundary between a transition metal and a double-layer dielectric, there is a significant difference of optical loss for surface plasmons propagating in opposite directions. Utilizing this structure, it is feasible to fabricate a competiti...
